February, 2000 -- A great time to commemorate the Saints' exodus in February, 1846, from Nauvoo, Illinois, to Winter Quarters and ultimately the Salt Lake Valley! It's also a time to reminisce on the miraculous crossing of the Mississippi as the Saints fled from Far West, Missouri, to Quincy, Illinois, in February, 1839.

The trip was outstanding! We experienced a climate very similar to what the Saints would have experienced during their journeys. Average daily temperatures (while we were there) were highs in the 30's and lows in the 20's. This interpreted for us a unique experience for two reasons: First, the cold weather brought out a new perspective on the lives of the Saints (versus the warm weather climate that is normally experienced by visiting during the summer months), and Second, there were absolutely no crowds to deal with!

A highlight of our trip included new "tidbits" of history including a glimpse into the Quincy Riflemen's Journal of 1843-1845. You can view the pictures below.... Others items of interest included a glimpse of the Nauvoo temple construction site. We spent a few moments at an unmarked tomb near the temple site. We discovered that my 4th-great uncle, William Mendenhall was a member of one of the quorums of the Seventy in Nauvoo. We paused at the location of the Hamilton Hotel in Carthage, where Governor Ford took his temporary stay at the time of Joseph & Hyrum's death. We watched mini icebergs float down the Mississippi. What a new perspective to add to our recollections of Church History.
